The Wisdom of Restraint
The Sapphire Review Vol. 2 | No. 6 • February 7, 2025
In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: But he that refraineth his lips is wise.
Proverbs 10:19, KJV
Much can be said regarding the tongue, the words we speak, and the words we receive. Scripture is far from silent on the matter. Let us seek to glean and reflect upon the wisdom in just a few of the scriptures that have been left for us regarding the use of words.
EXCERPTS FROM SCRIPTURE
There is a time to speak and a time to be silent.1 There is a time to answer a fool in his folly, and a time to simply leave the matter alone, giving no answer to a fool.2
In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, but one that restrains his lips is wise.3 He that has knowledge uses his words sparingly.4
There is safety in the multitude of counsellors, where words of varied perspectives, knowledge, experiences, and insights are received.5
“Without counsel purposes are disappointed: But in the multitude of counsellers they are established.” (Proverbs 15:22, KJV)
The heart of a righteous man studies that he may give a proper and correct answer.6 The tongue of the wise man uses knowledge in a good and right manner.7 His words will edify and build up the church.8
The man who does not stumble in his words is a “perfect” and mature man, who is able to control the whole body against the temptations of sin.9 Thus, the matter of how we use our words is of great importance, and an area of our lives that should be kept in constant, humble surrender before Jehovah.
PRAYER
May God help us to use our ears openly to hear, our hearts wisely to search and study, our brethren humbly for counsel, our minds diligently to consider, and our tongues prayerfully to speak, that in every way Christ may be glorified and His church edified through our words. May He grant us wisdom in speech and wisdom in restraint.
God Bless,
Charles
