But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings as eagles; They shall run, and not be weary; And they shall walk, and not faint.
Isaiah 40:31, KJV
EAGLES
Eagles, unique among God’s creation, often make their abode in nests which are tucked into the rocky crags of mountains towering over the earth.1 These majestic birds2 launch out from their lofty fortresses at heights reaching thousands of feet above the ground.3
With their wings stretched out, they meet the winds that are moving high above the earth, allowing them to effortlessly soar across the varied terrain below.4 Their keen eyesight allows them to see things clearly from these breathtaking heights. Such sight is another gift from their Creator to complement their wings which carry them closer, than all the beasts of the earth, to the place where He sits enthroned.5
THE CREATOR
In verse 28 we read the following regarding God:
“Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, That the everlasting God, the LORD, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Fainteth not, neither is weary? There is no searching of his understanding.” (Isaiah 40:28)
He that created all things and holds them in balance6 has never fainted nor grown weary. Though a man could spend an eternity searching out the understanding of God, so vast and so deep are these waters that their limit can never be reached in any direction. Much like the waters of the great deep which surround the earth,7 so unsearchable is the mind of our God.
PHYSICAL MAN
As it pertains to man, we see a different picture in verse 30:
“Even the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall:” (Isaiah 40:30)
Even the most energetic and lively amongst our children will eventually wear out, grow tired, and need rest. The strongest, most diligent, most determined, and ambitious among young men in their prime can only push themselves so far before their bodies and minds collapse in sheer exhaustion. Once they have reached this point, there is no more might within them.
SPIRITUAL MAN
Yet, we read that God will give power to the faint and strength to those who are without might.8 Verse 31 concludes the chapter by bringing the eagle and the previous imagery together for a spiritual application.
Never fainting nor growing weary are characteristics of God. Any person that is to achieve such a thing (spiritually speaking) will be one that is filled with and being led by the spirit of God. When living in a place of full surrender, this person finds spiritual strength beyond what they could ever obtain through their own efforts.9
Run
Such a person will endure the most grueling and intense seasons of life without growing spiritually weary. They will not be moved.10 Their faith and confidence in God will not give out.11 At the end of the trial, they will have gained spiritual strength.
Walk
Such a person will consistently keep God, His commandments, and His will before them day after day throughout the routine and uneventful periods of their lives. They will delight themselves in the LORD, Yahweh (Jehovah),12 and the desires of their hearts will be pleasing unto Him.13 They will call upon Him as long as they live.
They will not love the world neither the things of the world,14 and they will keep themselves unspotted15 from the pollutions therein. No spiritual sign of fatigue, backsliding, staleness, or neglect16 will be found in their lives, but rather fruits being brought forth from the living water within them,17 unto the glory of God.18
WAITING & FAITH
The eagle has great faith in its wings. As it leaps out from its nest, it has no fear of plummeting to its death. Without hesitation, it springs forth and stretches its wings in faith, to then be met by the wind which carries it high above the earth below.
This is not a blind or presumptuous leap, for that would be foolish. Rather, it is one of confidence in its Creator and in His design of its wings. His word and His promises do not fail.19 His word is tried and pure.
“The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.” (Lamentations 3:25–26)
We must learn to quietly wait upon our Heavenly Father and not to take matters into our own hands.20 We need not to seek out the help of man in a panic or when all hope seems to be lost - for vain is the help of man.21 We have a loving Father who promises to provide for us22 and calls us to cast all our cares upon Him.23
But will we wait for His answer, His timing, and His direction?24 Are we fully surrendered to His will and His choice for the outcome, whatever it may be? Are we pressing for our personal petitions to be answered over waiting patiently for simply that which will bring glory to Him?
Great blessings are in store for those who have learned to wait upon the LORD. They shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings as eagles. They shall run, and not be weary. They shall walk, and not faint. As surely as God has spoken… they shall.
PRAYER
May God lead us through any and every circumstance that is needful for our wings of faith and confidence in Him to grow, that our lives may bring glory to Him and bless those around us. May He help us to run and not be weary; to walk and not faint.
God Bless,
Charles
I like how Charles differentiated between run and walk.
Thank you again Charles for your beautiful insight into God's Word 🙏.
